As we all know, sustainability for the built environment is more than just materials and administrative procedures. Sustainability involves the spatial design of a structure, its location and orientation on a site, and the owner’s operation of the building after occupation. However, those characteristics are rarely conveyed from one party to another through detailed contract requirements. This is where specifications play a role in establishing the material and installation requirements, as well as the administrative procedures to ensure those requirements are being met during construction. This session does not focus on specific sustainable requirements, but how those requirements are commonly provided in the contract documents through the specifications.
