What's My MasterFormat Number?

MasterFormat is the master list of titles and numbers used to organize specifications and other project information for most commercial building design and construction projects in North America. It lists titles and section numbers for organizing data about construction requirements, products, and activities. By standardizing such information, MasterFormat facilitates communication among architects, specifiers, contractors and suppliers, which helps them meet building owners’ requirements, timelines and budgets.

Converting a number from 1995 to 2004/2010?

In 2004, MasterFormat expanded from a 5-digit, 16-division system to a 6-digit and 50-division system. CSI ceased to license and support MasterFormat 95 on December 31, 2009. In 2010, new numbers, titles and a new division were added to MasterFormat as part of CSI and CSC’s planned annual update process for MasterFormat. Additional updates and additions have been in subsequent revisions in 2011, 2012, 2014, and most recently in 2016. Copies of MasterFormat and www.masterformat.com include a conversion matrix to help you convert any 95 number to a 2004/2010/2011/2012/2014/2016 number. CSI even offers a conversion iPhone app!

Got a tough question?

Many CSI members offer presentations on MasterFormat – look for them in CSI’s Directory. If you’re searching for someone to help you convert your specification masters, CSI recommends you hire a CSI member who is a Certified Construction Specifier (CCS) – you can find them in CSI's Directory.
