Our March program, "Resilient Roofing – Meeting the ASCE 7-16 Standard," continues with this year's "Codes and Standards" theme by examining one specific aspect of a standard that's an essential part of the building code.
A standard is a published technical document representing industry consensus about the design, manufacture, testing or installation of a material, product, or assembly. Industry organizations and professional associations that write standards draw on the expertise of a wide variety of interested parties – manufacturers, contractors, subcontractors, distributors, architects, owners, and pretty much any other building industry related role you might think of. Standards define specific quality and performance levels; building regulation cannot be effectively carried out without them.
Model codes incorporate many different standards by reference, either in whole or in part. When a model code is adopted as law, the standards embedded in them also assume the force of law. Our March presentation references ASCE 7-16 "Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures," a document that provides comprehensive criteria for determining design dead and lives loads, imposed by factors such as: soils, floods, tsunamis, snow, rain, ice, earthquakes, wind, and fire.
Our presenter is Robert Anderson from Elevate, formerly Firestone, now a part of Holcim Building Envelope, manufacturers of a diverse line of roofing solutions. He will provide an overview of the ASCE 7 standards and their geographic adoption, explore recent changes in the standard, and explain how the standard affects design and installation practices. This seminar provides 1.0 LU/HSW credit from AIA-CES to all who attend in person at the Masonry Institute or online via Zoom. Our chapter meetings this year are free and open to all.
